Reading Night Success!

What a wonderful Reading Night!Thank you to everyone who participated and hope even more people are able to attend next year. A special thank you goes to the people who went that extra mile to make it a success. Courtyard decoration for Scary Stories were provided by the PTA, with help from GMS students Tre' Durrette, Hunter Proffitt and Hunter's sister Samantha Proffitt.

PTA assisted GMS with funds for the wonderful dinner provided by Haywood Grill.
Thanks to all of the English teachers who offered a homework credit for attendance and all of the people who made themselves look super silly for a fun night for our kids.

This year's PTA Reflections theme is..."Diversity is..." Students, plan on expressing your thoughts about this theme either in the form of an essay, poem, song, dance, or film. Guidelines for each category are available in the Library and at the front office. The deadline to turn in your entry to your English teacher or art teacher is October 27. All entries must be placed in the Reflections box in the mailroom by Oct. 28th. No matter what the category, you will need a copy of the guidelines and a student entry form. Go, eagles! The end of the year is almost here, but we still have two major opportunities for folks to volunteer!

FIELD DAY: will be held for 6th and 7th grade students on May 31, from 8:30 - 1:15! We need many parent volunteers to help make this event successful! If you would like more details, or want to volunteer, please contact us at: gmseaglespta@gmail.com.

EIGHTH GRADE MOVING ON CEREMONY - JUNE 1: We need one volunteer to help set up the refreshment area from 5:00 - 5:30. Six additional volunteers are needed: four to cut and serve cake, and two to staff the drink table. These folks should report for duty at 7:00 p.m. We prefer that seventh grade parents volunteer, as this will give them the opportunity to see what's involved in the Ceremony, and not to mention, this will free up the parents and teachers of eighth grade students so they may be able to truly enjoy the entire evening. Spring time means Book Fair time!

The GMS Spring Book Fair is coming! We will be open March 28th through April 1st and also on Thursday night, March 31st from 5:00 - 8:30 p.m. during Math night. Bring your parents to see our selection of great books. The Young Adult case is also going to be available during the spring fair. Students will visit with their English classes. The Book Fair is here just in time for you to purchase books for some fun Spring Break reading! Volunteers are welcome, Mrs. Browder is scheduling volunteers so you may contact her or Mrs. Cooley if you are able to spare some time that week. Here's another great event going on Friday evening! It's possible to spend a little bit of time at the dance and catch some of the concert, too! See below for the details!
The Goochland High School and Middle School choruses would like toinvite anyone who is a fan of John Denver's Music to the final Benefit

Concert given by Jim Connor at GHS Auditorium on Friday, March 11 at
7:00p.m. Tickets are $7.00 each and will benefit the GHS and GMS
choral music departments. Mr. Connor has been so gracious for so many
years to offer his talents and give the money made to our schools. He
not only has participated in the Partners in the Arts program through
the middle school English department, has had 2 children go through
our schools, but has national accolades for his performances with John
Denver, Linda Ronstadt, Olivia Newton John, Barbara Streisand, The New
Kingston Trio, and others. He has won many gold records and was just
recognized on the Grammys for his contributions to the New Kingston
Trio. He is most well known for his composition, "Grandma's Feather
Bed," which he wrote and composed while touring with John Denver.

He will be leaving to go to Aspen, CO for a week to sing and play with
former John Denver band members after our concert. He also plays on
cruise ships, and is a regular performer in Aspen at John Denver
memorial events.

If you plan to attend, drop your child off at the dance, and then enter through the High School entrance! Remember, that permission slips for the March Madness Dance are due this Wednesday!

Our next PTA sponsored dance, March Madness, is coming up soon! Of course, we need volunteers! See below for all of the information from Kirsten Bilodeau, one of our Dance Committee co-chairs:

Hi, Everyone!

On behalf of Nicole Thornton and myself, I'm sending out a call for volunteers. The dance is in 2 1/2 weeks, on Friday, March 11 from 7-9 pm. We're asking volunteers to arrive by 6:45, if possible.

We need 3 volunteers to sell wristbands during lunches that day. Lunches run from 11:40-1:40, so we need help during these 2 hours.

The night of the dance, we need help with checking wristbands at the door, coatroom, Wii gaming, karaoke, concessions, and chaperoning. If you or anyone you know could help out, please let me know ASAP. Help us spread the word by forwarding this email.

I think this will be a great fun-filled night for all, and I hope to see you there.

The 30 minute documentary, “A Class Divided” will be shown, followed by a discussion. Coffee and dessert will be served. This is a free public event.

The film tells the story of an Iowa elementary teacher’s decision to teach a daring "blue-eyes/brown-eyes" lesson in discrimination to her class of third graders in April 1968, following the murder of Martin Luther King. It shows the impact of this lesson on the children 14 years later.

The GMS Sports Boosters is sponsoring a Spaghetti dinner in the GHS Cafeteria beginning at 6:00 p.m. Advance tickets are $5.00 per person; $6.00 at the door!
Our Winter Wonderland Dance will be held from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The dress code is "dressy casual", which means no jeans! Permission forms are due no later Wednesday December 8th to your child's homeroom teacher. Tickets (wristbands) will be sold for $5.00 on the day of the dance (December 10). The wristband is your admission to the dance. Don't eat too much, because refreshments will be available, as well as photos, Wii games, and karoke!
Get some special gifts during the GMS Sports Boosters Auction, which take place at 7:15 in the GHS Gym. A wide variety of items will be available: including Chick-Fil-A Gift Cards, Red Robin and Sunset Grill Gift Cards; UVA Basketball tickets, 2011 GHS football tickets; sporting goods; jewelry; Tupperware; Goochland YMCA; a guitar and lesson from White Hawk Music Cafe, and much more! IMPORTANT INFO FOR THOSE ATTENDING THE SPAGHETTI DINNER, DANCE AND AUCTION:

The doors between GMS and GHS will be locked for security reasons! When attending the Spaghetti Dinner and Auction, please enter and exit from the High School side. When entering the Winter Wonderland Dance, please use the Middle School Entrance. Students must have a wristband for entry into the dance (available for purchase the day of the dance).

Parents, this can be a great night out for you: eat dinner with your kids, take them to the dance, then come back to GHS for the Auction! When the Auction is over, parents may gather in the Auditorium or in the middle school cafeteria until the dance has ended.

Board of Supervisors Meeting on Tuesday December 7 at 7:00 p.m. The budget process is beginning, and school funding may be cut again, perhaps as much as $1.2 million. There will be additional meetings in 2011. We will keep you informed.
If you missed the chance to preview the new GMS Honors/Pre-AP program, you have another chance to so at the next Gifted Advisory Committee meeting, which is open to the public. The GAC meeting will be held on December 9 at 7pm at Goochland Elementary School.

DANCING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND!

Well, it's close to the words of the song! Our next PTA dance, Winter Wonderland, will be held on Friday December 10 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.! The attire for this dance is “DRESSY CASUAL”, meaning no jeans. Permission forms must be signed and returned to homeroom by Wednesday, Dec. 8th. Tickets for the Winter Wonderland dance will be sold for $5.00 during lunches on the day of the dance. Food will be available for purchase! There will also be an opportunity to purchase photos, and other fun activities!

An important agenda item of particular interest to current 6th and 7th grade parents and students is the new Goochland Middle School Honors/Pre-Advanced Placement Program. If you cannot attend, you will have other opportunities to preview the new GMS Honors/Pre-AP program, such as at the Gifted Advisory Committee meeting, which is open to the public, on December 8 at 7 pm also in the Annex Building Conference Room. See you at the annual GMS Back To School Night on Thursday September 16th @ 7:00 p.m.! We'll begin in the auditorium with a brief overview of PTA activities and budget presentation/vote. The evening will conclude with the opportunity to "become a middle schooler" and follow your child's schedule! You'll meet his/her teachers, and learn about class activities and expectations.

If you've missed your chance to join the PTA, we'll have a table set up for membership and sign ups for committees!

How are your Joe Corbi sales coming? You have until next Friday, September 24 to fill in that order form, or as much of it as you can! Money and order forms are due next Friday September 24th! The PTA thanks you for your efforts for the worthy cause of helping our students and staff at GMS!

GMS will hold its annual Back To School Night on Thursday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. Please plan to attend! It's a great opportunity to not only become acquainted with your child's teacher, but to gain an awareness about teacher expectations, curriculum, and daily class activities! A brief PTA meeting will be held before the evening's events begin. The meeting will include a budget presentation and vote, and an overview of PTA activities and events for the year!

Two important dates to mark on your calendar!

Tuesday September 7 - Our Joe Corbi Fund Raiser begins! Students will have an assembly that day and will be bringing home all of the information!

Thursday September 16 - Back-To-School Night! This is a change! Please join us in the auditorium for a brief PTA meeting before you visit your child's classes! We will be voting on the PTA budget, as well as giving you information on upcoming events. Students should be bringing more information home soon!

Missed our table last week on School Business Day? Not to worry, you can still join the Goochland Middle School PTA! You may just simply fill out the form and send in the payment ($5.00 per member) to your childs's homeroom teacher! Or, you may use the envelope that was provided in the mail! Need another form? You will find extra PTA membership forms in the Front Office! Many thanks to parents and GMS faculty who have already joined the PTA! Also, thanks to those who purchased decals and /or made a tax-deductible donation!

Did you get a chance to taste some of the free samples of the Joe Corbi products? Wow! Great carrot cake, cheese cake, and cookies! Imagine how the pizza and bread sticks will taste! Our PTA fundraiser will begin after Labor Day! Details will be sent home soon!

Joining the GMS PTA is easy: just fill out the form you received in the mail, or visit our PTA table! Too busy to stop by? Just use the envelope attached to your PTA form, and send it back to us! Oops - lost or misplaced your form? Stop by our table on School Business Day - Thursday August 19, and we'll have a form for you! We will also be selling decals, accepting tax-deductible donations, as well as offering free samples of yummy products from our our fund raising vendor, Joe Corbi's! GMS PTA membership is available for $5.00 per parent/teacher!
